One of the great warriors of world basketball, Felipe Reyes, is back in training camp with Real Madrid a couple weeks after having helped put Spain on the silver-medal podium at the recent Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Reyes proved once again to be an anchor in the middle as Spain reached the last few minutes of a classic final with a chance to win the gold medal before coming up short against the United States. Now, Reyes is turning his attention to the 2008-09 season ahead with the knowledge that his thrilling Olympics experience, shared with Real Madrid teammates Raul Lopez and Alex Mumbru, will only help his team try for new trophies. "Above all, after going through all of last season without a title, we're going into this one with a lot of desire to get at least one," Reyes told Euroleague.net. "We don't want to repeat what happened last year. We want to raise our level and do what it takes to compete for trophies in every single competition we enter, the Euroleague included."

Felipe, congratulations for such great success in Beijing. What has winning this silver medal at the Olympics meant to you?

"Well, we are very proud of what we achieved, and part of the reason is that it made so many people happy. We saw that when we arrived back to Spain afterward and with all the messages sent to us. A lot of people got hooked on basketball thanks to the work we did at the Olympics. I think that's what fills us with the most pride. And, of course, we are happy to be wearing silver medals, too."

Felipe Reyes - Real MadridMany people have commented that the final against the United States was among the best games they have ever watched. What was it like to play in that game?

"At that moment, you don't think of anything much more than playing hard and trying to do your best so that your team can win against your rival, in this case the United States. It was a difficult opponent, but we arrived to a point in the game when we thought winning was possible. While it's going on, you don't realize that it's one of the best games. It's only when you finish and people say 'Congratulations, I never saw anything like it'. All those kinds of comments give you goose bumps."

Have you seen the game again or is there any particular moment that sticks out in your mind?

"I haven't had time yet to see the game again. If there's a moment that sticks with me now, it's when we were two points behind them in the last quarter, and we kind of had them against the ropes. We were in a position to try to defeat the best national team in the world, and we felt, like, 'Wow, we can do this'. In the end, it didn't happen, but for that moment, the possibility was real."

What did this Olympic tournament say about the competitive level of European basketball?

"We could certainly see again that European basketball is closer and closer in level to American basketball. The big difference now is physical. They are stronger, for sure, but technically we are probably even, if not a bit ahead of them. So basketball in Europe is on the right track."

Your generation in Spain has been winning medals for a decade now, since the 1999 world juniors in Lisbon. How many more medals does this "golden generation" have left to win?

"A lot more, I hope. You never can tell, but we are an ambitious group of players and I'd say we have years left playing together, so we plan to get as many more as we can."

Felipe Reyes, Alex Mumbru and Raul Lopez - Real MadridLooking ahead, you are back in training camp with Real Madrid. After the disappointment of missing last season's Final Four in Madrid, what are your hopes for the coming season?

"Above all, after going through all of last season without a title, we're going into this one with a lot of desire to get at least one. Our team added some good players over the summer and the rest of us who are coming back are highly motivated. We don't want to repeat what happened last year. We want to raise our level and do what it takes to compete for trophies in every single competition we enter, the Euroleague included."

Even though new players like Jeremiah Massey, Qunton Hosley and Marko Tomas have arrived, the nucleus of the Madrid roster is back. What kind of advantage is that for you guys?

"I think it's good to maintain the same core group. When a team has a lot of new faces, it's sometimes difficult to jell because no matter what, it takes time for a team to come together. We have a lot of guys back from last year, with a few important additions, but with the help of the veterans, I think we'll be together quickly and be ready to function well from the first moment in both the Spanish League and the Euroleague."

How difficult will it be to succeed in the Euroleague this season?

"Every year, the Euroleague is more and more difficult. There are teams all around Europe doing a lot to sign star players and keep improving their rosters. It's difficult, but we also reinforced our roster, which I hope makes us one of the favorites to make it to the Final Four."

Felipe Reyes Cabanas nació en Córdoba el 16 de marzo de 1980. Este joven de 2,03 metros de altura debutó en la ACB el 4 de octubre del año 1998 y desde entonces se ha caracterizado por su garra y buena técnica. Además, destaca por ser oportunista en los rebotes bajo los dos aros.

Antes de su debut, Felipe Reyes formó parte de la cantera del Ramiro de Maeztu y jugó también en el Estudiantes, en las categorías inferiores. En el año 1997 empezó a jugar en el Estudiates Junior. Un año más tarde pasó a formar parte del Adecco Estudiantes, disfrutando de minutos también en el Estudiantes de la liga EBA, equipo filial del Adecco Estudiantes y participando en algún partido del equipo que competía en la Liga ACB. Durante las temporadas del año 1999 hasta el 2004 fue uno más en la plantilla del Adecco.

Felipe Reyes, que juega en la posición de pívot, ha sido internacional con la selección absoluta. Debutó con la selección el 17 de agosto del año 2001 en Los Barrios (Cádiz), en un partido amistoso frente a Israel, que finalizó con el resultado de España 81- Israel 72.

Entre los trofeos que ha obtenido se encuentran la Copa del Rey con el Adecco Estudiantes en la temporada 99-2000 y el subcampeonato de la Copa Korac con el mismo equipo en la temporada 1998-99. Consiguió la medalla de Plata con la Selección Nacional en el Campeonato de Europa de Suecia-2003, y posee también la medalla de Bronce con el combinado español en el Campeonato de Europa de Turquía del año 2001.

Felipe Reyes es el máximo reboteador de la Liga ACB con el Adecco Estudiantes con 354 rebotes (10,41 por partido) en la temporada 2002-03. Este jugador ha sido nominado 'Gigante EBA' de la temporada 1998-99 por la revista 'Gigantes del Basket'. También fue nominado 'Jugador de Mayor Progresión' de la temporada 1999-2000 por la misma revista. Otro de los galardones que ha recibido es la de 'Jugador de la Semana' en la temporada 2000-01, y en la temporada 2002-2003 fue nominado en dos ocasiones a este mismo trofeo.

El fichaje de Felipe por el Real Madrid se convirtió en todo un "culebrón" durante el verano de 2004. La incorporación del jugador, formado en la cantera del Estudiantes, supuso la undécima partida de un estudiantil al Real Madrid. Con Reyes se realizó el fichaje más caro de la historia del Real Madrid si se confirma que la cantidad pagada por el club blanco supera los 1,2 millones de euros. Con la contratación de Reyes se materializa un viejo anhelo madridista, ya que hace tres años ya estuvo a punto de hacerse con los servicios del pívot, cuando el jugador aceptó la oferta del club blanco, pero finalmente el Estudiantes la igualó y Felipe no salió del Ramiro.

El jugador admira a Pau Gasol y lo define como "increíble"; considera que su labor es muy buena para el baloncesto porque está consiguiendo que la gente se aficione a este deporte. Felipe Reyes aún no se ha planteado la posibilidad de jugar en la NBA. Prefiere centrarse en su carrera en la ACB ya que considera que en la NBA el baloncesto es mucho más físico y de músculo.

MADRID (Olympics) - The dust has finally settled on the Beijing Games and one of Spain’s top players in China, Real Madrid star Felipe Reyes, has beamed with pride when asked about his experience.

Reyes has 10 points and a game-high seven rebounds as Spain pushed gold-medal winners Team USA to the limit before falling 118-107.

"We are happy for the work we have done, for having put pressure on the United States,” Reyes said to FIBA.com.

“It's a pity that we haven't taken gold.”

The United States encountered little resistance until the semi-finals, with Argentina ultimately suffering a 101-81 defeat following the loss of Manu Ginobili to injury early in the game.

Spain then rebounded from a woeful performance in the preliminary round and trailed by just two points in the fourth quarter before falling in the title game.

Four years ago, Spain cut down the opposition in the preliminary round but then exited the Athens Games after a 102-94 quarter-final defeat to the United States.

At least this time, the world champions didn’t leave the Olympics without a medal.

“Our team has proved that in the crucial times, we step up and deliver good performances,” the 28-year-old Reyes said.

“This is my first Olympic medal and I am really thrilled. I believe Spain will continue to play a big role in the next years to come."

Spain will play in next year’s EuroBasket in Poland.

Que mejor forma de volver que hacerlo con la plata de los nuestros en los Juegos Olímpicos de Pekín. No hay duda de que han dado la talla en este campeonato.

La final ante EEUU es quizás uno de los mejores partidos que he visto nunca. La calidad y la garra de los españoles les hicieron tener opciones durante todo el partido. Llegaron a ponerse a dos puntos en el último cuarto, pero el acierto de los americanos y algunas ayudas arbitrales hicieron imposible colgarse el oro.

"Si les pitan los pasos que hacen, la defensa con manos que hacen y pitan todo, está claro que hubiésemos podido ganar perfectamente. Si los árbitros hubiesen aplicado las reglas FIBA hubiésemos ganado pero estamos muy satisfechos por haber ganado la plata".

Individualmente, Felipe ha tenido una de sus mejores actuaciones con la roja. Después de que una inoportuna lesión le apartara en gran parte del Mundial de Japón y el flojo Eurobasket del verano pasado, el jugador del Madrid llegaba con ganas de reivindicarse a Pekín.

Muy regular durante todo el campeonato y con destacadas actuaciones contra EEUU en primera fase y decisivo en semifinales ante Lituania y en la final de nuevo contra los NBA.
Una media de 9'6 puntos y 5'1 rebotes en apenas 17 minutos en cancha avalan el gran torneo de Reyes,

Por otro lado, bonito gesto de Felipe acordándose de las víctimas del accidente de Barajas y dedicándoles la plata conseguida. "Lástima que no nos dejaron rendirles un homenaje a todas esas víctimas, pero que sepan todas las familias que todo esto va dedicado a ellos".
